When the emergency has passed off, make sure first that it is safe to re-enter the premises. Even after the danger of the flood, or hurricane or whatever else is over sometimes some parts of the environment may still be vulnerable. Hence do not enter the place without some tetanus shots. Also, go in with the required protective clothing such as gloves, head covers, and NIOSH certified mask over the face.
It is very important to get a good documentation of the building and all the items there to know the extent of the damage and give proof thereof. Hence make a good survey of the entire place and take immediate photographs with the available camera so that there is proof of the destroyed items. Later on you could supplement these makeshift photographs with better ones. These photographs are a record of the damage to your property.
Make a voice record of all the damage to the property on your cell phone and make a list of the important details to be discussed with insurance officers and other officials regarding the reimbursement procedure and other repair works that you may have to undertake.
Then set about making necessary repairs to the place by removing hazardous or falling objects first. If there are any items lying destroyed or lying broken on the floor, it can be put away. The room temperature should be brought down and so should the relative humidity so that mold does not form. Put plastic sealing on the windows. If the curtains, carpets and any other bedding or furnishings are wet then remove all the moisture from it by squeezing it. If this is not possible by hand, then resort to a humidifier that can be bought. Whatever expenses are involved, do make a thorough list of the expenditure, and maintain all important bills.
When you salvage your belongings first give priority to important institutional information and accounting records, then any other items that have been loaned to you by others. Next on the priority list for salvage is things that could get worse If left unattended and finally try to salvage the items that are more likely to be saved by doing so and give up the ones that are irreparable.
