Employees today usually have a health plan provided by their respective companies. These health plans are usually availed from an HMO, Health Maintenance Organization or a PPO, Preferred Provider Organization. There is also an option to purchase from a POS or a Point of service plan. Here are some of the basic facts about HMOs and PPOs to help you figure out health insurance providers.
HMOs work within one service provider only so if you are enrolled in this plan then you are going to be given medical aid through a system of one network only. You can choose from a huge number of hospitals, laboratories, clinics and pharmacies in this network. You also need to choose a PCP or a Primary Care Physician who will be responsible for managing and coordinating all of your health care. A referral is needed from your PCP whenever you need to consult a specialist based in another hospital or clinic that is part of the network.
People who are enrolled in a PPO health care will not need to have a PCP. You can go to any clinic or hospital that is part of the network and you can choose your own doctor. All you need to pay is the annual deductible plus no referrals are required. Don’t go to a non-accredited hospital or clinic since you will need to pay more.
For payments in HMOs you will only need to pay for your prescriptions, doctor visits and procedures. Employees also need to pay their monthly dues together with their employers. Some PPOs have the option of allowing people to pay for an annual deductible for any medical services that you have to avail from non-accredited clinics and hospitals. PPOs will reimburse any medical expenses that you incurred in any of their accredited hospitals as well as non-accredited hospitals just as long as you have the official receipt. HMOs do not have option like this one so you have to go to an accredited hospital for your treatment.
You have just read some of the basic facts about HMOs and PPOs that provide health care insurance. Be sure to select a health care provider that will perfectly suit your health needs.
