Enjoy the Menai Straits Bridge to Anglesey, Innovative Design by Thomas Telford

When you approach Anglesey in North Wales you will see the enigmatic Menai Straits Bridge, designed and constructed by Thomas Telford, the famous 19th century engineer. The strong tidal waters crossing to Anglesey from the mainland has been a challenge for centuries and finally Telford and his team managed to come up with an innovative design which was up to the task. You will enjoy the coastal views from this bridge as you cross to the island for your vacation.

Turn back the history pages and you may see that what is the busy little town of Menai Bridge today, may have been a Roman village, which people reached by crossing in a small ferry across the Menai Straits where the gap between island and mainland is narrowest. To the north are the Lavan sands where Augustinian monks heading for Penmon Priory would struggle across at low tide, heading for Llanfaes, near Beaumaris.

Many will ask how Thomas Telford came to build this Menai Straits Bridge, an example of real engineering innovation for its time in the early nineteenth century. After Britain and Ireland moved closer under the Act of Union in 1800, there was pressure for much improved transport links and connecting the mainland to Anglesey was a major consideration.

The story of the famous composer Handel trying to get to Dublin in 1742 suggests how difficult it was to travel between England and Ireland. As if it was not enough to get through the Snowdon Mountains, the traveller still had to negotiate crossing the Menai Straits and then sail from Holyhead to Dublin.

With a sea route across to Ireland and a port at Holyhead, the missing link was an improved crossing to Anglesey island. Political pressure was applied in the right places, and work began on the bridge in 1819, with the two massive landmark towers being constructed from Penmon limestone. While the bridge was originally supported by 16 huge wrought iron chain cables that reached across the 175 metres of expanse, they had to be replaced by steel cables just before the Second World War.

Travel times have been transformed dramatically since the early nineteenth century. Just consider that before 1826 it took 36 hours to travel by coach from London to Holyhead. After completion of the Menai Suspension Bridge journey times reduced to 27 hours for the same route. Contrast that with a car journey today between Holyhead and London taking about 6 hours, such are the benefits of Telford’s Menai Straits Bridge, modern roads and the internal combustion engine.

On Anglesey you will discover some stunning coastal and woodland walks close to this enigmatic bridge, which are well signposted with relatively easy access. Looking north from the bridge you will see the small harbour at Menai Bridge with small yachts and fishing craft moored nearby. In what are strong tidal waters you, you may see yachts and motor craft passing under the bridge, heading for Beaumaris and Puffin Island.

As you stand on the bridge looking south west, see how the strong Menai Straits currents flow towards the dual rail and road Britannia Bridge and on past Caernarfon Castle to the open sea. Off the Anglesey Coastline to the south is a small island, Ynys Gorad Goch, while on the shoreline a Statue of Admiral Nelson stands, and nearby is the former Indefatigable Sailing School. You can indulge your senses in all these experiences from the high vantage point of this enigmatic Menai Straits Bridge.

Once a novice discovers what great pictures they can take with a digital camera without having a great deal of knowledge they become keen photographers. They are out snapping photos at anything that moves practically. The results they achieved without the knowledge has now raised the question as to what they could achieve with some learning of the basics.

Step 1: The first step is to really look at what you want to take a picture of. Focus on the main point then try and get that object only into your photo with as little detail of other objects as possible, unless of course they are important to your picture as well. Its true that you can cut out all the junk stuff from your picture with you photo software editing program. The problem is though whenever you crop a picture on your computer you lose a little of how sharp it is and the quality is just a little bit less. Remember the whole goal now is to produce very high quality photos.

Step 2: Get as close to your subject as you are possibly can, unless of course it happens to be a wild animal, then in that case you may want to use you zoom lens at this point. Either way if done properly, you are going to get great photos. It is interesting to see how many new photographers just don?t seem to like to concentrate on the object of the picture by getting a closer shot. I think many of them feel the picture will be blurred if they do that. Alternatively, they will cut a portion of the object off. That is what your viewing area is for. What you see is what you get.

Step 3: Forget about the classic centered photo. Photos that are taken with the object being off centered are far most interesting. In addition, it will capture the curiosity of the individual looking at your photos much faster. Years ago, it rather was the unwritten rule to keep the subject totally centered. Not so today, especially with the use of digital cameras.

Step 4; The best compliment that could be paid to your photography is when you draw the person looking at it into the photo. In other words making them feel like they are actually there. There is a technique you can use to do it. It is by making sure you have a leading line in your photos such as a fence line or road perhaps. Even doorways do a great job at this.

Step 5: It would be most unfortunate if you went through steps 1-4 then messed up on step 5, which is paying attention to your lighting. Unless you have lots of money for lighting equipment take as much advantage as you can to utilizing the natural lighting of sunlight. Then utilizing your camera flash at the right moments. Remember there is a right way and wrong way of using natural sunlight. While it can enhance the quality of your photos, it can also ruin them as well.
