Steelers Win 12th Straight Over Browns
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been playing the Cleveland Browns for longer than any other team in the National Football League, dating back to’50. And while it hasn’t been quite that long since the Cleveland Browns won a game against the Steelers it may be starting to feel like it. On Sunday, Pittsburgh won for the twelfth straight time dating back to 2003 as they topped Cleveland by a final score of 27-13. The defending Superbowl champions improved to 4-2 while the Browns fell to 1-5.
The good news for NFL betting enthusiasts who took the +13′ with the Browns as a road underdog is that they managed to cover the pointspread by the slimmest of possible margins. Betting against the defending Superbowl champion is a long standing handicapping concept, and this season at least its worked like a charm-the Steelers have only covered one of their first six games. Cleveland, meanwhile, evened their NFL pointspread record at 3-3 on the season. The Browns have covered three straight after dropping their first three both straight up and against the spread.
Pittsburgh dominated the game in virtually every statistical category. They amassed 28 first downs to 12 for Cleveland, held a 543 to’7 total yardage advantage and a 36:46 to 23:14 time of possession advantage. Both teams turned the ball over four times, and the Steelers led only 17-14 in the third quarter. Most of the post game talk from both sides was about a controversial spot in the first half where the Steelers were given a first down on a short yardage play when it appeared that they didn’t make the required yardage.
After the contest, Derek Anderson spoke of the frustration of continually coming up short against the Steelers. The Browns have only one once in ten games since Pittsburgh moved into their new home at Heinz Field:
“We’re not trying to lose every time we go out here. We put tons of hours in and … it’s frustrating. Every single week, it’s frustrating.”
Steelers’ tight end Heath Miller said the team is happy to be where they are at this point despite not playing up to their standards:
“I think we haven’t played our best ball yet and that’s pretty comforting. We’ve gotten a few wins here without playing our best.”
The Steelers will host Brett Favre and the 6-0 Minnesota Vikings next Sunday. The Steelers are a -4 home favorite with the total set at 45. After a bye week, the Steelers will hit the road to play another undefeated team as they take on the Denver Broncos on Monday, November 9. Cleveland will host the Green Bay Packers this Sunday, with the Browns a +7 home underdog and the total set at 42′.

Tennessee Titans Can’t Find a W
Not many people would have thought the Titans would start the season this badly. This could mean the Titans’ season is already over before it really started.
The Titans play in the AFC South, the same division as the Indianapolis Colts – this doesn’t bode well for the Titans. Once you dig yourself a hole in the NFL in the beginning, you spend the rest of the season trying to climb out of it.
Many thought this was a Super Bowl team last season. I think I thought so myself. They made a few changes during the off-season that seemed positive.
Having acquired Nate Washington and a few other valuable pieces, many fans were hoping this would be enough to withstand the loss of Albert Haynesworth. Anytime you lose a player as valuable as Haynesworth it will definitely show, however nobody would have expected it to show this much.
In week 1, the Titans faced a difficult challenge in visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh. Having to play the defending champions at their own field on opening night is a huge challenge in and of itself, but the Titans handled the challenge well, nearly coming away with a win against the Steelers.
With the loss of DT Albert Haynesworth, the Titans defense may not be as strong as it once was but they still have defensive skill players such as Cortland Finnegan, Chris Hope, Keith Bulluck, and Nick Harper.
While it’s true that the Texans seem to play the Titans well (think back to that nail biter last season with all of those Rob Bironas field goals), the Titans looked pretty dreadful during the loss. Their running game was fine, but the defense was notably weaker than that of last season. They looked like one of the worst defensive units in the entire NFL.
Since the Titans play in the same division as the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, hopefully they can get some “easy” wins against them and other below average teams to finish the season with a respectable record. This can either be a very long season for the Tennessee Titans – or it can be one where they find out what they are made of bouncing back from a bad start

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Can’t Find a W
Fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to the 09′ season with not much hope for anything good to happen.
This was a strong team that made the playoffs in 2007, but one that faltered a bit in 2008, slipping in terms of both offense and defense.
With the loss of Joey Galloway, the offense looked as if it was in a position to suffer, but some nice additions in the offense department (Byron Leftwich at quarterback, Derrick Ward at running back from the Giants, and Kellen Winslow at tight end from the Browns) put the Bucs in a position to build on their offensive struggles from the 2008 season.
Not scoring any points in an NFL game just shows you how offensively challenged the Bucs are – that is what happened to the Bucs in week 3 against the New York Giants. The Giants did what they wanted and the Bucs had no answers the entire game. The defense is just as bad as the offense giving up more then 30 points a game.
RB Cadillac Williams was a rising star in the NFL a few seasons ago. In 05′ Williams ran for over 1,100 yards in– games but injuries have put his progression as a RB on hold. 07′ – 08′ Williams only played in 10 games, scored 7 touchdowns and rushed for 441 yards.
The main WR on the Bucs is Kellen Winslow – who in his best year in 07′ caught for over 1,000 yards with 5 touchdowns for the Cleveland Browns.
QB Josh Johnson has been named the started of the Bucs – while it’s too early to say what he is made of – if the Bucs were confident in his abilities he would have been named the starter over Leftwich to begin with.
The Bucs defense is one of the worst in the league – if not THE worst – the Bucs have given up more the 30 points more times then many teams give up the entire season. It will be a long season for the Bucs in 09′.

Is This the Year for the Houston Texans?
The Houston Texans were the trendy pick at the start of the 09′ season. The Houston Texans never had expectations this high before in the franchises 7 year history. I guess they have the right to set expectations this high after a solid performance in 2008, with a very young team.
This was a team that seemed to improve a bit each season during the past few years, and after an 8-8 finish, with a solid offensive core and an improving set of defenders, many claimed that the Houston Texans had a legitimate shot to win the division or make the playoffs.
The week 1 loss to the Jets made many wonder what was going on. The offense simply wasn’t there. After a week 2 win for the Texans and a Jets win that shut down the Patriots’ offense, maybe it was simply a matter of the Jets defense being extremely effective during the first two weeks of the regular season. I do believe this was the case against the Jets, not to mention the stellar performance of Matt Sanchez as well.
It will take more then great play from Johnson and consistency from QB Matt Schaub for the Texans to make a run at the playoffs. Steve Slaton must pick up where he left off last year and continue to improve.
Andre Johnson once again looked like the best wide receiver in the NFL, and despite the absence of Kevin Walter, the offense was more than efficient thanks to the fill-in role of Jacoby Jones.
While the Texans have a young, gifted WR in Johnson, they can’t out score opponents every game. The defense must perform well enough to give the offense the opportunity to make plays and keep games close.
The running game was effective too, as Steve Slaton had a nice game. Defensively, there was definitely room for improvement (Chris Johnson of the Titans had a career high in rushing yards), but to beat the Titans, one of the best teams in the NFL in 2008, is very impressive. Especially when you consider the fact that the Houston Texans beat the Titans in Tennessee.
Every year teams rise that were thought of to be mediocre, teams fall that were thought of being very good. It will be interesting to see how the Texans respond to expectations for the first time in the franchises history. To be the team, they must beat the team – that team now is the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South Division.

Chad Henne Steps Up for the Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins were the feel good story of the 2008 NFL season. The team finished with a 1-15 regular season record in 2007, and was written off as quite possibly the worst football team of the decade.
The 09′ season for the Miami Dolphins has been nothing like 08′. Statistically, Chad Pennington is the most accurate passer of all-time. While he might not have the “big arm”, he finds his receivers when they are open.
With Chad Pennington out the rest of the season, the Dolphins season seems to be over before it really began. It’s hard to win in the NFL when you have uncertainties at the QB position.
The Dolphins rode the wave of enthusiasm into the 2009 season and expected big things out of an improved offense that would look to enjoy another successful football season.
After controlling the ball for 45 minutes against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football, the Dolphins could not secure the win, heartbreaking no doubt. I really thought they would get the W.
Seven points scored in a game against an average Falcons defense raised questions about the Dolphins’ offense and their effectiveness. It’s going to be a long season if they don’t get it right.
Furthermore, every team in the AFC East is looking good, which makes things all the more competitive for Miami this season. The Jets, Bills, and naturally, the New England Patriots, have all made bold statements and look strong in regular season play.
The Dolphins’ Week 2 match-up wasn’t much better, as a disheartening loss during the last minutes of the game dropped the team to 0-2. The Colts are a tough opponent, but the Dolphins needed that win badly. Better luck next week perhaps?

Green Bay Trounces Detroit
The Green Bay Packers didn’t do a good job protecting their quarterback last Sunday, but against the lowly Detroit Lions it didn’t really matter. Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers was sacked five times, but Green Bay used a big first half offensive outburst to coast to a 26-0 NFL victory over the Detroit Lions. Rodgers threw two first half touchdown passes which was complimented by four Mason Crosby field goals as Green Bay improved to 3-2 on the season. The Lions slumped to 1-5 with the loss.
NFL football betting enthusiasts who backed the Packers as -14 home dogs easily cashed their tickets with Green Bay’s third pointspread cover in five games. Detroit slipped to 2-4 against the spread. The 26 points scored went UNDER the posted total of 48′. Green Bay has gone UNDER in two of their five games this season, while Detroit evened their NFL totals record at 3-3.
In the victory, Packers’ receiver Donald Driver passed Sterling Sharpe for first place on the franchise reception list. Sharpe finished his career with 596 receptions, Driver now has 602. After the game, he talked about the accomplishment:
“It couldn’t it come in a better place — at home in front of the fans I’ve played in front of for so many years. It feels good. Now I just have to wait on Sterling to call me and congratulate me.”
Despite the convincing victory, cornerback Tramon Williams wasn’t happy with the relatively narrow margin:
“It feels like a 50 to zero game, but we didn’t quite get there. I felt we should’ve put more points on the board.”
For the Lions, their quarterback woes continued. Matthew Stafford is already out indefinitely with an injured knee, and against Green Bay backup Daunte Cullpepper injured his hamstring in the third quarter and was replaced by the Lions’ third string quarterback Drew Stanton. Cullpepper is now listed as ‘questionable’ on the official NFL injury report. After the game, he talked about Detroit’s lack of offense:
“It’s very disappointing, very frustrating. It’s embarrassing to me not to be able to move it on the field and get points on the board. We’ve got to figure out a way to do that, simple as that.”
The Packers will play on the road this Sunday, heading to Cleveland to face the Browns. The game is currently off the board as linemakers try to get a handle on the personnel impact of the Browns’ struggle with a flu bug making its way through the locker room. Green Bay will host the Minnesota Vikings the following Sunday followed by a trip to Tampa Bay on November 8. Detroit has a bye this weekend and will return to action as they host the St. Louis Rams on November 1. They’ll play their next two on the road, with games in Seattle and Minnesota.
