Who is the Greatest American Rock Band in History?
I just came across an article from a few years ago that stated that Americans chose Pearl Jam as the greatest American rock band of all-time in a survey. Don’t get me wrong – I really like Eddie Vedder and the rest of the band, but I was shocked to see Pearl Jam as number one!
This wasn’t number one band of the 90s, but it was the number one American rock band ever.
Then I started thinking about things. Who would normally be chosen as the best rock bands of all time? The Beatles. Perhaps some would go with Led Zeppelin. Others might choose a band like the Rolling Stones.
Then I realized that I genuinely couldn’t come up with a better American rock band than Pearl Jam. I tried, but I saw their point.
There are recent bands like Wilco and the White Stripes, but they haven’t been around for long enough. There are bands like Journey and Bon Jovi, but they don’t have as many hits. There were guys like Bob Dylan and Billy Joel, but they were solo artists and not bands. No one was able to best Pearl Jam.
As weird as it sounds to say this, it seems like Pearl Jam may be the best American rock band of all-time. I’m not sure if any rock bands produced more hits than they did through the decade, not to mention the fact that they sell out arenas religiously whenever they tour.
The fact that Pearl Jam continues to write some great albums to this day only builds the case they make as the greatest American rock band. They just recently came out with Backspacer, and this critically acclaimed album is being called their best of the decade.
Pearl Jam is a breath of fresh air in a music world that’s been tainted by corporate interests. They’ve never broken up, never have had any of the drug issues that so many other bands suffer from, and they’re all about pleasing their fans. I tip my hat to Pearl Jam for these very reasons.

Copperhead Snakes
Copperhead snakes are the snakes that cause the nastiest and most frequent snake-bite problems in the United States. The copperhead can be distinguished by its stout shape and its neck, which is distinct from the body as well as by its pale cross-band tan pattern that gets darker in the middle and on the sides.
Copperhead snakes have pale bellies, similar to the ground on which they live, but they sometimes appear pretty whitish. There are visible spots or pits on the head of copperhead snakes that look like darker tiny specks, but there is also a rather discolored stripe on the head area behind the eyes; this stripe looks very diffuse on top but it gets brownish towards the edges.
Copperhead snakes can be found almost anywhere, from rock and pond areas to woods and the shores of streams. Their choice of habitat is dictated by the predominance of prey, as copperhead snakes live on frogs, small rodents, cicadas, lizards, caterpillars and anything else that cabe taken without too much trouble.
The most usual hidey-holes for copperhead snakes, wood piles, stone slabs, walls, debris and abandoned or ruined buildings are the most common, which explains why people come across copperheads so often in such areas. The active months of the year for copperhead snakes are in the spring and summer for as long as the weather stays warm. After that they go into hibernation.
The dens into which copperhead snakes retreat during winter are their homes year after year, and usually there are more specimens living in the same place. In summer time when it is too hot outside, copperhead snakes will stay in the shade during the day and go out to hunt at night. On pleasantly warm days, the copperhead will simply bask in the sun on rocks or wood debris. Copperhead snakes do not hatch eggs, but give birth to live young. The number of young varies between one and fourteen. The mating period extends untill mid autumn.
The bites of copperhead snakes require immediate medical care since they are not only very painful but they may also lead to permanent scarring and tissue loss. Avoid copperhead snakes when you come across them. Many people get bitten when trying to kill them or pick them up.
Snakes will not harm you unless they feel threatened, then, you will become the victim of a fierce attack by a creature that is just as afraid of us as we are of them. Statistics reveal that copperhead snakes have the highest incidence in bite frequency in the United States, because these snakes attack quite out of the blue without giving threatening warnings like other species.
