Clean Air Ducts Can Mean A Healthier Home

While most homeowners have their furnace and air conditioning systems checked, cleaned and maintained regularly, often the duct work that runs throughout the home is neglected. These air ducts can collect debris and dust, and do need to be cleaned from time to time. This can be done at the same time as the operating equipment is checked.

The air in your home circulates within the vent system. In colder climates, cool air is directed to the furnace through return vents. It is warmed by the furnace, and returned to the rooms through duct work. Over time, dust, debris and pet hair ad dander can build up in the system. The air quality and air flow can sometimes be improved by having the ducts cleaned.

This process can be especially important for homes that have been recently constructed or have had renovations done as there may be excessive saw dust within the vents. It should also be performed from time to time even if that is not the situation. Keeping the furnace filter clean and changing it regularly can also help to reduce the amount of debris within the ducts and therefore within the home.

Children and pets can sometimes introduce foreign items to the ducts. This can include toys, pens and pencils, and anything else that will fit. If there are a lot of items, or a large item within the vents, it can cause a blockage or allow dust to accumulate around it. This can seriously affect airflow.

When cleaning them, the company you choose will need to cut access panels in the ducts in order to attach vacuum hoses. This is dome near the furnace, usually starting with the intake areas. All of the vent grills will need to be covered to seal up the system and allow for maximum suction.

The most common kind of vacuum system is one mounted on a truck. These have the best suction. When the hose is in place and the vents are covered, the vacuum is started. Most times, the cleaning begins with blowing air into the system to loosen dust and debris. Then, the vacuum can effectively clear out the vents.

Small holes can be made in basement ducts. This allows for the use of tools that are inserted into the holes and help to agitate and direct the debris toward the vacuum system. Following this, the air conditioner coil and the furnace are cleaned, the access holes and other holes made are sealed, and the covers are removed from the grills.

Cleaning furnace and cooling system vents takes a couple of hours. It is a good idea, and while there is no concrete scientific proof that it improves air quality, it can be beneficial, in particular for people that have respiratory problems or allergies. It can also help to reduce the dust that is circulated within the house. If they have not been cleaned in some time, cleaning the air ducts can improve the operating efficiency of the furnace.

Why Is There Activated Carbon In HEPA Air Purifiers?

Unless you’re an aquarium hobbyist or own a water purification system that uses carbon, the idea of activated carbon in HEPA air purifiers probably seems strange to you. Even if the concept isn’t completely foreign, most still don’t know exactly what activated carbon actually does.

How Is Active Carbon Used In HEPA Air Purifiers?

For most people, though, the first time they encounter activated carbon will be in choosing HEPA air purifiers. Most customer begin their search for air purifiers due to asthma or allergies. As they learn more about HEPA air purifiers, though, they’ll learn that many of their respiratory problems come from chemicals and odors in the room. Therefore, most quality HEPA air purifiers are designed to address the chemicals and odors as well as the allergens themselves.

How Was Activated Carbon Used Before HEPA Air Purifiers?

Activated carbon has actually been around for quite a while, and though it sounds quite scientific, our ancestors have made good use of it for at least the last two centuries. Back then, they already knew of activated carbon’s extraordinary absorption qualities. In the early 1900′s, the stuff was produced and sold commercially in the form of a powder. At the time it was only used to remove color from sugar or taste or smell from water. Although we didn’t know it at the time, that was barely the tip of what this stuff is capable of. In World War I, the military discovered that they could use activated carbon in gas masks, filtering chemical agents from the air for the soldiers. The soldiers also used it for water purification, just like their ancestors. By this point, it was also available commercially as a granular form instead of just powder, which was when it began finding uses in even more situations.

What The Word “Activated” Means

Most people have a general idea of what carbon is – it’s a mineral. The most basic example would probably be charcoal. Activated carbon is what you get after heat is used on the carbon to drive all of the impurities out, leaving room for more to take their place. Think of it as a sponge, only instead of using pressure to extract the contents, we’re using heat. Once the activated carbon is full, it can actually be reactivated by re-heating, though this is considered by most to be both impractical and dangerous. So, in this case, activated basically means empty.

Different Types Of Activated Carbon

There are a variety of types of activated carbon, and it is described in a variety of ways, but generally activated carbon includes a wide range of amorphous carbon-based materials. These materials have a high degree of porosity (lots of holes) and a relatively large surface area. Basically, this means it has excellent absorbent characteristics. These absorbent characteristics are why activated carbon works so well filtering air and water both.
